Rosie vs ChatGPT
ChatGPT answers when you ask. Rosie tells you before you think to.
Both can reason about a problem. Only one of them is already watching your team's tickets when you're not looking.
| Comparison | Rosie | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An engineering chief of staff that watches the tools your team already uses and tells you what needs your judgement. | A general-purpose AI chatbot that generates text responses to whatever you ask it. |
| Where it lives | Inside your workflow: it shows up as a digest in your inbox, a Slack message, or Rosie's own workspace. | A separate tab at chat.openai.com. You leave what you're doing to go ask it something. |
| When it speaks up | Continuously, on its own schedule, the moment a rule breaks or a ticket goes quiet. | Only when you start a conversation. Nothing happens between your messages. |
| Memory | Knows your team's tickets, your org's rules, and what it already flagged you about last week. | Limited conversation memory, with no persistent knowledge of your team or its tools. |
| Connects to | Jira, GitHub, Slack, PagerDuty, Snyk, and more (see below). | Some plugins and web browsing. No managed connection to your engineering tools. |
| What it does with what it finds | Tells the right person what's wrong and why it matters, so they can decide what to do. | Generates a text answer, and you still have to act on it yourself, across every tool. |
| Security | Runs on Cloudflare's network with a dedicated, isolated database per tenant, never a shared table. SOC 2/ISO 27001 controls are built; certification is in progress, not yet complete. | SOC 2 certified. Enterprise data controls available on paid plans. |
| Pricing | Early access, not yet announced. | Free tier plus paid per-user plans. Check openai.com/chatgpt/pricing for current rates. |
The actual difference
ChatGPT is a chat window. Rosie is a colleague who already looked.
Ask ChatGPT to check your team's sprint and it'll tell you it can't, it has no connection to Jira. Paste the export in yourself, and it'll do a decent job summarising a snapshot from a moment ago. Rosie doesn't wait to be asked: it's already watching, and it tells you the moment something's actually wrong, not the moment you remembered to check.
Neither of these is about which model reasons better. Both can use frontier AI models under the hood. The difference is what each one is connected to, and whether it speaks up on its own.
Nobody sent that message. Rosie found it on its own and brought it to Maya, the same way it does every morning.
Connects to what you already run
No rip-and-replace. No extra reporting ritual.
Rosie sits across the tools your team already uses. ChatGPT can browse the web and run a handful of plugins, but it has no managed connection to any of these.
Which one you want
Choose ChatGPT if:
You want to think a problem through, draft something, or ask a one-off question that has nothing to do with your team's live tickets.
Choose Rosie if:
You want something watching your team's Jira, GitHub and Slack continuously, so you find out what's wrong before you have to go looking for it.
Most engineering managers end up wanting both: ChatGPT for thinking, Rosie for watching. They're not actually competing for the same job.
FAQ
Questions people ask before choosing.
Isn't Rosie just ChatGPT with extra steps?
No. ChatGPT and Claude are things you open and ask. Rosie is something that's already watching your team's tools and tells you before you think to ask. The underlying intelligence might be similar; what it's connected to and when it speaks up is the actual difference.
Can't I just paste my Jira export into ChatGPT and ask it to summarise?
For a one-off, sure, and it'll probably do a decent job. It won't remember your team's context next week, won't notice a PR going stale on day three, and won't enforce a rule across every team in your organisation. It's a snapshot. Rosie is continuous.
Is Rosie replacing my need for ChatGPT?
No, and it's not trying to. For writing, brainstorming, or a one-off question, a general assistant is still the right tool. Rosie exists for the thing a chat window structurally can't do: sit inside your team's tools full-time and flag what actually needs you.
What can't Rosie do that ChatGPT can?
General reasoning outside your engineering organisation's data, creative writing, or answering questions unrelated to your team's execution. Rosie is narrow on purpose, it's built for one job, not every job.
How is this different from just writing a custom prompt for my team?
A prompt answers once, when you run it. Rosie runs continuously, and the rules an organisation sets, like what counts as a blocker or what needs an owner, apply automatically to every team, not just the one person who wrote the prompt.
